The basics

What Is a Green Card?

A Green Card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, allows foreign nationals to live and work permanently in the United States. It provides legal proof of permanent residency and opens the door to many benefits, including access to employment opportunities and the ability to eventually apply for U.S. citizenship.

There are several paths to obtaining a Green Card, such as through family sponsorship, employment opportunities, refugee or asylum status, or special programs like the Diversity Visa Lottery. While the benefits are significant, the application process can be complex and requires strict compliance with U.S. immigration laws.

Eligibility

Do I Qualify To Apply For A Green Card?

Eligibility for a U.S. Green Card depends on meeting specific requirements within your visa category.

Residency Status

If you already have an approved immigrant petition and a visa is available, you may apply for adjustment of status by filing Form I-485 with USCIS. Applicants outside the U.S. must complete consular processing at a U.S. Embassy or consulate. Those already in the U.S. can apply directly without leaving the country.

Family-Based Green Cards

Family sponsorship is one of the most common ways to obtain a Green Card. To qualify, you must have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident relative who is at least 21 years old, maintains a valid U.S. address, and agrees to provide financial support during: citizenship is obtained or when the applicant has 10 years with a green card.

Criminal Record

Most applicants must demonstrate a clean criminal record. If you have past offenses, eligibility depends on the type and circumstances. In such cases, professional legal review is essential—we can connect you with a licensed immigration attorney for guidance.

Legal Compliance

Applicants must show compliance with U.S. immigration laws, including lawful entry and adherence to visa conditions. Prior overstays or violations can affect eligibility and may require additional review.
